About Multistage Centrifugal Pump Test Rig For Fluid Mechanics Lab

The present Centrifugal Pump Test Rig is a self-contained unit operated on closed circuit basis containing a sump tank. The set-up consists of multi stage Centrifugal pumps. Pump is coupled with individual Motors.RPM Indicator with Proximity sensor indicates the RPM of Pump. Flow of water is measured by using measuring tank and stopwatch. Vacuum & Pressure gauges are fitted on suction line and delivery line of each pump to measure the pressure.

Learning Objectives/Experiments:

To determine total head, pump output, overall efficiency and pump efficiency of the multi stage centrifugal pump.

Required for Operation:

Electricity supply: Single phase, 220V AC, 50 Hz, 5-15 amp combined socket with earth connection. Earth voltage should be less than 5 volts.

Water Supply (Initial Fill).

Floor Drain required.

Floor Area Required: 1.5 m x 0.75 m

Technical Specifications:

Pump : multi stage centrifugal pump , Capacity 1 HP.

Medium Flow : Clear Water.

Sump Tank : Capacity 120 Ltrs.

Flow Measurement : Using Measuring Tank with piezometer, Capacity 60 Ltrs. (approx.)

Stop Watch : Electronic

FAQ's of Multistage Centrifugal Pump Test Rig For Fluid Mechanics Lab:

Q: How is the flow rate measured on the Multistage Centrifugal Pump Test Rig?

A: Flow rate is determined by using the transparent measuring tank alongside a stopwatch. By recording the time required to collect a known volume of water, users can accurately calculate the flow rate during each test.

Q: What are the benefits of a transparent acrylic tank in this test rig?

A: The transparent acrylic tank allows clear observation of fluid levels and behaviors during experiments. This feature enhances demonstration quality and helps students visually understand the operational principles of multistage centrifugal pumps.

Q: When should the digital/analog pressure meters be checked during an experiment?

A: Pressure readings at both the inlet and outlet should be monitored before, during, and after each test run. This ensures accurate data collection and supports analysis of system pressure changes as flow conditions vary.

Q: Where is this pump test rig best suited for installation and use?

A: The test rig is designed for use in educational laboratory settings, particularly fluid mechanics labs in universities, colleges, and technical institutes. It can be conveniently placed on laboratory tables thanks to its compact, table-mounted design.

Q: What process is involved in setting up the multistage pump test rig for experiments?

A: The setup involves installing the rig on a stable table, connecting supplied hoses and fittings, filling the sump and measuring tanks as required, and ensuring all meters and pressure gauges are properly calibrated. The instruction manual provides detailed installation and operation steps.

Q: How does the equipment ensure highly accurate readings during tests?

A: Accuracy is achieved through carefully calibrated measurement instruments, robust construction, and precision flow and pressure monitoring devices. The rig's design maintains measurement errors within 1%, supporting reliable performance data for educational analysis.

Q: What usage and benefit does this test rig deliver for fluid mechanics studies?

A: By enabling hands-on evaluation of multistage centrifugal pump performance, the rig helps students and researchers understand flow dynamics, pressure development, and efficiency characteristics. Its easy operation and clear demonstrations promote practical learning and experimentation.
